International operations

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania grants the right to participate in international operations to military units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces consisting of soldiers and civil servants of the National Defense System (hereinafter - NSA). Lithuania's military contribution depends on the needs of a specific operation and the available military capabilities.

2017 October 12 by resolution no. XIII-678 The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania approved the following maximum number of soldiers and civilian KAS employees to participate in international operations until 2019. 31 December:

  • Up to 50 soldiers and civilian LAF personnel in the NATO operation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan;
  • Up to 5 soldiers and civilian LAF personnel in the NATO operation in the Republic of Kosovo;
  • Up to 30 soldiers and civilian LAF personnel in the EU anti-piracy operation Atalanta;
  • Up to 40 troops and civilian LAF personnel in the UN operation MINUSMA in the Republic of Mali;
  • In the EU military operation in the Southern Central Mediterranean, „EUNAVFOR MED Operation SOPHIA“, up to 20 military and civilian LAF personnel;
  • In the United States-led coalition Inherent Resolve military operations in Iraq, up to 40 military and civilian LAF personnel;
  • NATO programs in the Republic of Iraq and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - up to 10 soldiers and civilian LAF personnel;
  • In the military training operation in Ukraine for training purposes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces - up to 60 soldiers and civilian LAF personnel.

By the order of the Minister of National Defense, Lithuanian soldiers are appointed to perform military service in a foreign state or international military or defense institution. Currently, by the order of the Minister of Civil Affairs to:

  •  Troops deployed to EU military training mission in Mali;
  •  Soldier sent to the EU military training mission in the Central African Republic.

Lithuanian soldiers participating in international operations when the North Atlantic Council decides to use NATO Response Force and/or NATO military headquarters personnel in an international operation or the Council of the European Union decides to use European Union military headquarters personnel for an international operation are sent by, June 29 resolution no. XII-2542 “On the Participation of Military Units of the Republic of Lithuania and Soldiers Assigned to the NATO Response Force, Joint Expeditionary Forces in International Operations”.
